In 2013, I had an opportunity to take my passion for literacy and learning to a higher level as one of the winners of the Atlanta Families' Award for Excellence in Education (now Teach On Project). The $7,500 grant was used to implement the "Language Enrichment Program" that I created at Frederick Douglass High School to improve at-risk students' language skills, especially reading. This experience allowed me to empower several students to successfully pass the (former) Georgia High School Graduation Test.
Although I am the proud mother of one biological child, I am grateful to act as a second "mother" to the thousands of young people who have been birthed in my heart. For over 30 years, I have served thousands of beloved sons and daughters around the world.
In 2016, after teaching my French students about the science of persuasive writing, they were able to "convince" francophone, legendary, former NBA player and humanitarian, (and one of my favorite people in the world), Dikembe Mutombo to visit West Lake High School.
With Dr. Shamita Johnson, I presented a special plaque of commendation and appreciation to Mutombo for the charitable actions he’d made to others, especially those in his native country, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
After my students watched a few videos about the blight and abject poverty that Mutombo was trying to eradicate, I convinced them to join me in making a donation to his foundation. I am so proud that we presented our hero with a check for $500 dollars for his foundation.

My raison d’être is teaching through stories, but most importantly, I love helping others do it too. That is why I started the J. California Cooper Writing Club for young people. Contact me to learn more.

In 2012, as a French teacher, I created and hosted the first French Spelling Bee (at Frederick Douglass High School) to celebrate and highlight students who excelled in the study of the French language and francophone cultures. The first five contests were sponsored by Pinnacle Credit Union, Kroger, and private donors. Dr. Shamita Johnson was the first teacher to bring students to participate in this special event.
Avant-garde Books, LLC was established in 2017. It is the first mother/daughter, Black-owned bookstore in the world! While our physical location is currently closed, we are still committed to eliminating illiteracy around the globe. #LetsReadTogether #InvestInYourBrain #LiteracyMatters #Read
My commitment to eliminating illiteracy around the world is stronger than ever!
