The J. California Cooper Writing Club has been established at Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy to give students an opportunity to develop and hone their writing skills and become published authors.
ELA instructor, Ms. Corendis C. Hardy, is the sponsor.
The club will meet every Wednesday (except holidays and breaks) from 4:00 to 5:00 p. m. in room C415.
Parental consent is required for participation. Parents are responsible for picking their children up in a timely manner.
There are no memberships fees to join. However, if students can have personally designed book covers made for their works. This cost may vary depending on the design.
*Student book signings will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Media Center.
Joan Cooper, known by her penname, J. California Cooper (1931 – 2014), was an award-winning, African American playwright, short fiction writer, and novelist. Her major works include Homemade Love which won the American Book Award in 1989; Family; The Wake of the Wind; and her award-winning play, “Strangers”.
